We’re Here For You
Pets are expensive. From everyday essentials like food and litter to annual needs such as vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and flea and tick care, our furry family members can make a serious dent in household budgets. While we encourage responsible pet ownership and never recommend bringing an animal home without the ability to care for them—both financially and physically—we also recognize an important truth: life happens. Job loss, medical emergencies, housing changes, and unexpected veterinary needs can affect even the most prepared families.
That’s where Second Chance Humane Society steps in. Our community assistance programs are designed to support pet owners during difficult moments, helping families stay together whenever possible and ensuring pets receive the care they deserve.
Veterinary care can quickly become overwhelming when an unexpected illness or injury occurs, and delaying treatment can have serious consequences for pets. Through our Vet Voucher Program, SCHS provides financial assistance in the form of vouchers that act as short-term loans. Approved applicants can receive aid covering the cost of urgent or standard veterinary care at one of our partnering clinics. SCHS pays the clinic directly, and the family then repays the balance through a manageable monthly payment plan. This program ensures pets can receive timely medical care without forcing families to choose between their pet’s health and other basic necessities. Applications are available on our website and can be completed in less than 10 minutes.
Our Pet Food Pantry serves hundreds of families and their pets every year. Open daily during adoption hours (11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.), the pantry provides free pet food, supplies, and other necessities to anyone who needs them. There are no income requirements and no applications. Community members can simply stop by and pick up what their pets need. In addition to food, we often have items like beds, toys, treats, and other enrichment supplies available. Our staff is always happy to help and answer questions while you’re there.
All of SCHS’s community programs share one common goal: keeping pets with the families who love them. We know that pets provide companionship, comfort, and emotional support, and losing them can be heartbreaking. However, we also understand that sometimes rehoming is the most responsible and compassionate decision for both people and animals. When that happens, SCHS is here to help guide the process. Surrender applications are available on our website, and our staff is available by phone to discuss options and next steps. Like many shelters nationwide, we often operate with a waitlist, accepting animals as space becomes available. Other resources can be found on our website.
Second Chance Humane Society is proud to be a safety net for pets and the people who love them. Whether you need short-term assistance or guidance during a major transition, we’re here—because everyone deserves a second chance.
